Rockpore ehf – Scaling Circular Innovation in Iceland and Europe
Rockpore ehf has entered into a license agreement with Rockpore AS to produce Circular Lightweight Aggregate for Carbonation (CLWAC) and establish Europe’s first full-scale production facility in Iceland. The company aims to reduce industrial waste by up to 20,000 tonnes annually, transforming recycled materials and mining tailings into high-performance materials for hydroponics and artificial turf while ensuring compliance with European sustainability regulations.

Iceland’s strategic location, modern harbors, and clean energy make it an ideal hub for scaling production beyond the initial capacity. Its renewable energy sources and efficient logistics support cost-effective expansion into European markets.

Rockpore ehf’s impact extends beyond sustainability, driving job creation, industrial diversification, and exports while reducing landfill dependence and aligning with Iceland’s circular economy goals. Through strategic partnerships and advanced processing technologies, the company is paving the way for sustainable material innovation in Iceland and beyond.

Our Mission
Rockpore ehf intend to transform industrial waste into high-performance, circular materials, reducing carbon footprints while promoting full material reuse. Our adapted circular-by-design approach integrates reverse logistics, carbon capture, and sustainable production, ensuring that our solutions support the transition to a low-carbon economy.
Impact
Impacts for Hydroponics and Artificial Turf
Rockpore is developing a low-carbon, fully recyclable substrate designed to transform the hydroponics industry. With superior water retention and nutrient absorption, it enhances plant growth while reducing water and fertilizer waste. Unlike traditional substrates, it has the potential for carbon capture and storage (CCS), actively contributing to climate-positive food production. By integrating circular economy principles, Rockpore’s innovation supports the scalability and sustainability of high-yield hydroponic systems, reducing environmental impact and promoting resource-efficient agriculture.

As Europe enforces the 2031 ban on sale of rubber crumb infill, Rockpore is developing a circular, non-toxic, microplastic-free alternative. Designed for full lifecycle reusability, it can be recovered, reprocessed, and reintegrated without waste, aligning with circular economy principles and EU regulations. CLWAC enhances durability, reduces maintenance costs, and eliminates microplastic pollution, contributing to climate mitigation and sustainable urban sports infrastructure. As regulations reshape the industry, Rockpore will provide a future-proof, high-performance solution for artificial turf systems
Scaling for a Sustainable Future
Rockpore is planning to establish a production hub in Iceland. Our partnerships with industry leaders and research institutions ensure that our materials meet the highest European environmental and performance standards.

By combining innovative material science with circular economy principles, Rockpore ehf is set to redefine sustainability in agriculture and sports infrastructure.
